Alternative name: The Martyr Actually, that's a role already, except for the publicly announcing part. But I've never seen it used...

Here's an interesting rule variation I found on mafiascum that I think could be interesting to debate:

Well, this will be interesting. You see, every month on the 2nd sunday, our church has a game day where we play Battle Tech. Next month, I will be hosting Live mafia games there. I'll try to video tape it.

Cool, how complex will the roles be that you will be using?

Most of them have never played mafia, so they will be like MIRC roles.

I made up quite a few roles. Here are four of them.
Child (Town-aligned): Is immune to all night action except for investigation, roleblocking, protection, the Psychopath's nightkill, and switching. If a child is swapped into harm’s way, it can die. It also takes an extra vote to lynch a child. Children, however, have no lynch vote themselves. A child’s night power is to hide behind an adult, who will protect the child from swapping and the Psycho. If they hide behind a Psychopath or any Mafia except Godfather, they die.
Don’s Daughter: She is part Mafia. If she survives until the second day, she chooses someone to marry (be it Town or Mafia, it doesn’t matter). Both spouses are informed of each other’s roles. Then there is a wedding. On the day of the wedding, the whole town shows up, so any lynchings are postponed. At the wedding, anyone that knows who the Don is (be it Mafia, the daughter’s groom, or a Cop) may ask a favor. The Don always accepts, but the event itself has a 25% chance of actually happening.
Consigliore (Mafia): He/she has no official role until such a time that the don dies, when he becomes Don/Godfather. If both the consigliore and don die, the town automatically wins.
Psychopath (Can be Independent or part Mafia): Picks one person each night to kill. If investigated by a cop, there is a 50% chance the Psycho will be arrested and essentially roleblocked and voteless for a day and a night. He can’t be lynched while in jail either, but he can be targeted by night kills. A Psycho can only be incarcerated once, but after he gets out, it takes one less vote to lynch him.
And, LordManiMani, This is the first time I've heard it as an official rule, but that's always the way I do it on IRC mafia.

Most of those look like large combinations of other roles. Sure you could use them, but would probably be overkill.
Consigliore might be a keeper though, but it probably shouldn't be used in games with a mafia larger than 4 members.

I just thought of a interesting role. guardian angel: after he dies he can choose one person to protect from a lynch or night kill. or another Idea for this role is he trades his life for the protection of someone from a night kill.

Ah, that's pretty good. Like a twist on the Vengeful Townie role. Though the second is more like a Bodyguard or Martyr.

I thought of the second one as i was writing it. the first was a bit more thought about.

Actually the Magypsy role in Mother 3 Mafia was sort of like it; when he died he could give a Memento to another player that would give them an extra life if they die.

DnD Nerd - Selects a class: Sorcerer, Barbarian, Cleric or Rogue. Starts at level 1. Each night, rolls a d20 and attempts to perform an action based on that class. If the result is 11 or above (You add the DnD Nerd's class level times two to the roll, i.e. if you roll an 8 and he's level 1, the result comes out to 10. The host performs the roll) , he performs the action successfully and gains a level in that class. If the result is 10 or below, however, the action backfires. The class abilities are as such: Sorcerer level 1: Bus Drive. Sorcerer level 2: Protect self. Sorcerer level 3: Kill. Barbarian level 1: Protect Self. Barbarian Level 2: Counter Night Kills. Barbarian Level 3: Kill. Cleric Level 1: Protect Self. Cleric Level 2: Protect Other. Cleric Level 3: Revive Player. Rogue Level 1: Role Block. Rogue Level 2: Imitate other (Chooses target, imitates its action, and then targets another player to carry out the imitated action). Rogue Level 3: Kill. The DnD Nerd cannot take levels in any class other than the one he started in. When a DnD Nerd reaches level three in a class, he is able to use any of the three skills in the class provided he makes a successful check. Yes, it's gigantic, but I like it And for reference, when an action backfires, it means it merely fails, with three exceptions. If you protect other and it backfires, the person you protect dies. If you kill and it backfires, you kill yourself. If you attempt to revive player and it backfires, you die.

How about...
Rockstar - role is publicly revealed day 2 because, well, everyone knows who the rockstar is.
Bookie - Mafia aligned. Runs a book keeping operation and earns the mafia profit. If he runs his operation smoothly for two days in a row, he becomes a full mafiat. If at all detected by the detective, he shuts down his book keeping operation and becomes a coward.

Haha, nice on the bookie one =p
Trapmaster - May choose to set a trap near him at night with any effect, anyone who targets him will trip one of the traps. Once a trap has been used once, it is discarded. The trapmaster is unable to use two traps with the same effect at any one time.

Gigantic Jerk - Mafia Aligned. The gigantic jerk MUST insult at least one person each day at risk of death. (For use with the brock sampson role maybe?)
Getaway Driver - Mafia Aligned. If any of the mafia (excluding the getaway driver or mafia aligned non mafiats) are detected, the getaway driver immediately drives them to a safe location. They are detected as townie.

Thought about this one today:
Wordbomber + - Independent aligned, the Wordbomber can bomb any word that is not mafia related or commonly used, and gains special bonuses depending on the length of the word that a person activates:
3 letters: Provided with a good fake claim 4 letters: Provided with an extra action that night (Game host can decide on the actions, probably things related to the fake claim) 5 letters: Night kill immunity 6 letters: The person who was blown up by the bomb is also janitor'd 7 letters: An extra night kill
Not sure about the bonuses, but could be interesting to see people trying to get others to explode big word bombs.

I have one, I am thinking of using for the mafia game I am developing
Lantern: You may choose a player to protect, and if that player is targeted for a night kill, the person who attacked him is killed instead. You may also reveal your role and learn a role of one of the mafia members, although you won't know which player has that role.

okay here is a role I came up with (initially as a joke) on IRC
Washing Machine: Each night, you can clean a person. If that person is mafia, they will become a standard townie. If that person is town, they will die. Has no effect on independants.

Problem is, the mafia know who their mafia buddies are and can rat them out. I have seen a role similar to this that converts .5 mafia though (like thieves and spies), I forget what it's called.

^Why would they though? I would've thought the more mafiats there are the easier it is for them to win.

What are you talking about? I meant that a mafiat becoming a townie would break the game.

Problem is, the mafia know who their mafia buddies are and can rat them out. Why would they rat them out? That seems stupid. And plus, no-one would use it, they would betoo afraid of killing townies.

Oh. I see.
Hmmm.
Well then Washing Machine could act as a reverse framer, making guilty people seem innocent. Or is that already a role?

Alright now for a slightly more serious role. It's sort of a detective/cop modifacation, but whatever.
Artist (Town-Aligned)
Each night, the artist targets a player, and recieves a picture of their character. Obviously only to be used in forum games with themes.
And I came up with this post restriction, possibly already exists but anyways.
Third Person.
You must always refer to yourself in third person (with your name). In IRC mafia, this is done with the /me function.

Hehe, there was a game on Smashboards where someone had that restriction, everyone thought he was Misa from Death Note. Actually, the game never finished so I don't know who he actually was.
