The facts were these...
So begins one of the most creatively amazing shows I have had the pleasure of viewing in a very long time. The premise: a boy, Ned, discovers that if he touches something dead, it comes back perfectly to life (he does this for the first time when his dog gets hit by a truck). He later discovers, upon bringing his mother back and later being kissed goodnight, that anything he has already touched will die when touched again. He eventually discovers that there is a 1 minute grace period, during which something can be brought back, then touched to death again, without killing some other creature within a random proximity.
The show's plot, however, takes place some 15 years later, when Ned, now the owner of a Pie restaurant, does double duty as partner to a private investigator. Their process: search for rewards for information regarding murder cases, go to the city morgue, touch the murder victim, and ask who killed him. Present the evidence to the police, and profit.
Notable Information:
Written by Bryan Fuller (Heroes, Dead Like Me)
Narrated by Jim Dale (Dr. Terminus of Pete's Dragon, narrator of the Harry Potter audiobooks)
Jim Dale is what makes the show for me. His actual lines (reminiscent of H2G2) and dry tone (reminiscent of Peter Jones, who originally voiced The Guide) set this show up quite nicely.
Anyway, the show itself could be described like a combination of Dead Like Me meets The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy set in a Roald Dahl kind of world. It is by no means realistic, but very much a modern-fantasy-detective comedy show.
If you have time, I highly recommend watching the first episode (see link). ABC's video site no longer goes back this far (as near as I can tell) so the subtitles may be annoying, but it is quite worth it if you are looking for something new and completely different.
