I saw this movie a few weeks ago, and I'm still thinking about it.
Battle Royale is basically a movie depicting a police state Japan existing in another timeline. This Japan has passed a law saying that, once per year, a freshman class will be selected and placed on an island where the students must kill each other off until only one student survives. The survivor gets to live. The law was passed by the government to instigate distrust among the citizens to prevent them from gathering together to start an uprising (since the battle is shown on national tv and depicts former friends killing each other; it shows that people will betray their friends when it comes to their own survival).
But this is all backround information on the actual movie itself, and you dont see the Japanese citizens living their lives controled by the government. This movie is about one class' fight on the island. There are many deep morals in this movie, despite the violent nature of the film, and has a lot to say about love, hate, revenge, and much more. This is NOT a mindless bloodbath of a film.
I encourage anyone not upset by death scenes to check this movie out. Hopefully, you will like it and tell your friends to watch it too because that's where the true joy of it lies. This movie is so much better when you have friends to talk about it with.
Google version. You might want to minimize the screen for better picture quality.
