OK, so far, in every game I've played, I've had trouble contributing on Day 1. I just have trouble knowing what to say. What are some general tips on Mafia and scumhunting, as well as tips on how to contribute on Day 1?

It helps, but I think we should out our own stuff in the wiki.

we really should get someone who's confident in their mafia-playing abilities to write the article. I would offer, but I don't think I'm quite there yet.

Yeah, that's my alt-account for testing and stuff, sorry.
I could write an article based on tips I find in other articles, but I'm not sure I can write one from my own experiences. I personally find it easy just to copy and credit them.

I have trouble contributing on Day One, and as a result get in trouble.

I have that problem offsite, pretty much always (although I manage to stave off lynch until D2 but still!) The Day 1 blues are sadly common and are a huge reason D1 nolynches are so usual...

Generally, when you're mafia, you want to seem as active and helpful as possible day one. You want to do the same thing you would do if you were town; stimulate as much discussion as possible, and ask people questions. A good way to scumhunt is to ask people for specific reads including quotes on a particular player. Scum players often use vague suspicions to try and skirt along in a wishy washy manner.
For example: I think "x" is suspicious, but people can do that as town too.
You want to try to get people to talk as much as possible, whether you are town or scum. I guess the rest is really down to experience of what some scum do that other scum don't, etc.

The best way I know to catch scum, really, is sort of unique to me, but it plays upon the skills that I have: I'm a writer; therefore I tell stories. For me, ultimately, the key to finding a Mafioso is to look at what they're saying and doing and see if the two are congruous to one another. When I begin to suspect a player of being Mafia, I begin to pretty much write a story to figure out why they're acting in a manner to set off my alarms. If the story eventually begins to seem farfetched or illogical, then I just pass on it for a while. However, if the story I begin to write makes sense, then my suspicions are confirmed, and I go and tell the story I've constructed in order to be (1) a potential argument against that player and (2) an RFC (request for comments) to see just how sound or how strong other people believe the argument is. And ultimately, the job of a Townie should be to be fearless. To not be necessarily afraid of making mistakes or making accusations that turn out to be wrong. Get other people to talk, ask questions, and know when to do the classical sacrifice play of information (reveal a tiny bit about yourself in order to spur a conversation forward). D1 is hard, but ultimately someone needs to convert a day of joking around into a day of serious discussion somehow.

Here's a really good article from the site I basically learned to play mafia on.And another pretty interesting articleThe basic idea is try to put yourself in other players' shoes. What was the motivation for their post? Are they trying to find scum, or are they just trying to look like they're trying to find scum? On Day 1, you don't have any buddy or townie interactions to look at, which makes it harder. It's especially hard to find tells from the random voting, but mostly what I've found that works fairly well is to look for players trying to look inconspicuous. Townies (at least theoretically) shouldn't be afraid to dive in and stir stuff up; for scum, doing that can often be disadvantageous, because it draws attention to themselves, possibly making the get investigated, or worse, lynched. Contribute anything. If you're town, vote for whoever you think is most likely to be scum. Even if you only think that person has a slightly higher chance of being scum than anyone else, it's worth it to vote, because it's the best shot you have, and the only way you'll get better is if you are bold. Plus, if you are posting your opinions, it's easier for the rest of the town to get a better idea of what you're thinking, and therefore easier to read you. Now if you're scum, try your best to vote for whoever you think you would as town. If you are reasonably bold in your opinion, you'll be able to fool people. If you can, try to resist waffling on lynches, as that's a solid scum tell people can look for.
